Fez: Stepping Back in Time
Welcome to Morocco. Your host will greet you at the Casablanca arrivals terminal after you clear customs, and transfer you to Fez (approx. 3.5 hours). Arrive at your hotel, where you can spend the rest of your afternoon recuperating from your journey and settling into your accommodations. At sunset, your host will take you on a walk through the medina near the hotel, introducing you to the new sights, smells, and sounds of the medina. You will pass by the famous Al Quaraouiyine mosque. Al Quaraouiyine is oldest existing and continually operating educational institution in the world and is sometimes referred to as the oldest university. It was founded by Fatima al-Fihri in 859, becoming one of the leading spiritual and educational centers of the Muslim world. In 1963, it was incorporated into Morocco’s modern state university system. End your first day on a traditional Moroccan dinner at Riad La Maison Bleue, accompanied by live music.
Fez: Religious Treasures & Cultural Wonders
Spend the day with your guide, exploring the winding alleys of the Fez medina (the old town). Fez is the oldest of Morocco’s imperial cities and its medina is the largest car-free urban UNESCO site in the world.
Enjoy a hidden medina tour of Fez showcasing the alluring charm of the old town, the colorful streets and souks, and the rich tapestry of life that exists within its ancient walls. Gain access to ancient palaces and Islamic gardens, venture into the depths of the tanneries, observe weavers at their loom and discover hidden workshops where generations of artisans ply their individual trades and adapt century old techniques to a modern market.
Recommended lunch at Dar Hatim, a family-run restaurant and home. In the early evening, with a food expert, go on a souk tasting trail to experience the energy and essence of the Fez street food scene as it comes to life in the early evening. This fascinating tasting trail by night reveals the captivating appeal of the medina as the sun goes down and the locals enjoy the specialties that only the evening offers. Explore the spice, pastry, meat, and honey markets.
Sahara: Road to the Sahara
Depart Fez for a 7-hour journey to the Sahara Desert with your guide and driver. Stop along the way to visit remote towns that retain a traditional Moroccan atmosphere, including Ifrane and Imlil. As you go further south, you will notice the dramatic shift in the landscape as well as the architecture.
A boxed lunch will be provided on this transfer. As you approach your final destination, you will start to see desert forts and adobe formations that are unique to this region. The traditional form of dress in this area is also particular to the area: the women are usually covered head-to-toe in black and the men in blue with turbans.
Finally, in the distance, you will see the soaring dunes of the Sahara Desert. Reach your tented camp on camelback at sunset. Enjoy an open fire dinner and traditional Sahara music under the stars in the evening.
Skoura Valley: Sunrise & Desert Forts
Rise early to watch a sunrise of a lifetime. Watch the colors of the sky and the dunes change as the sun slowly rises over the desert. After a hearty breakfast, depart for Skoura Valley. On this 4-hour excursion, stop in various villages along the way, known for harvesting roses and producing the famous Moroccan rose water in the Spring. Visit exquisite desert forts that used to hold entire villages. Explore the Gorges of Dades and Todra, with their spectacular natural beauty that combines streams, desert rock formation, and palm groves.
In the early afternoon, reach your hotel, a breathtaking property tucked in the Valley of Skoura near Ouarzazate. Enjoy a beautifully set-up lunch in the gardens of your hotel. Have the rest of your afternoon at leisure to relax by the pool and take in the warm Moroccan sun. At sunset, private transfer to a spectacular lookout point where you will experience a private Moroccan tea ceremony, facing panoramic views of the Skoura Valley. Return to your hotel for a special dinner.
Skoura Valley: A Secluded Oasis
The following morning, your guide will take you on a trek through the valley. Explore its orchards and villages with their forts and traditional lifestyle. Skoura is known for its many historical places as well as its natural attractions. Enjoy a visit in the palm grove and visit Kasbah Amerhidil, an ancient adobe fort. Explore the small beaches along the Dades river where you can swim, and stop by the Toundount salt mine, where “Tazoudasaurus Naïmi”, a 180 million-year old dinosaur, was discovered.
Private transfer to a nature reserve nearby for a gourmet picnic lunch. Return to your hotel after lunch for some time at leisure. In the late afternoon, your guide will take you to the Valley of Sidi Flah where a candle-lit dinner will be waiting for you, surrounded by beautiful desert rock formations.
Marrakesh: The Red City
After breakfast, private transfer to Marrakesh with your private guide (approx. 4.5 hours), across the Ouarzazate Plateau through the Atlas Mountains. Along the way, you will have the option to visit the exquisite fort town of Ait Ben Haddou – famous for Hollywood movie sets. You can explore its adobe structure and hidden alleyways, overlooking the valley. A boxed lunch with be provided along the way.
Arrival at Marrakesh in the afternoon. This is a city of immense energy and history, and one of the most compelling of all African/Arab cities. Check-in to your hotel and relax at leisure.
Marrakesh: Ancient Palaces & Endless Souks
Start your morning with a visit to Jardin Majorelle, a gift to Marrakesh by Yves Saint Laurent in 1964. Explore the electric-blue villa and its gardens that preserve the vision of its original owner, landscape painter Jacques Majorelle.
Founded almost 1000 years ago, Marrakech is a feast for the senses and has remained at the heart of Moroccan life ever since, acting as Sultanate capital on occasions, but now undoubtedly as the country’s cultural center. Visit its main historical attractions, including the Koutoubia Mosque, the Saadian Tombs, an ancient university and a palace.
Recommended lunch at the Amal Foundation, an NGO that trains domestically abused women the culinary arts to provide them with an independent lifestyle. You will get to meet with the founder, Nora Fitzgerald, and the women whom she helps through this inspiring organization.
Visit Chabi Chic, a boutique store that carries lovely handmade goods, and Al-Nour Textiles, a local co-op that help women with disabilities to learn artistic skills. In the evening, enjoy a night out at one of Marrakesh’s best restaurants, Bo-Zin, which boasts a chic atmosphere, a bar and upbeat music.
Marrakesh: Traditional Arts & Hammam Experience
This morning, your expert guide will lead you through the back end of the medina where all the handmade crafts are made. Get a glimpse of this middle-aged-like environment, where masters work on copper, wood, silver, and leather. This walking tour will provide you with unique insight on how the famous Moroccan crafts are made.
Experience a Moroccan Hammam at La Sultana. This experience includes an invigorating massage and ancient bath rituals. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at Le Tobsil -- one of the best Moroccan restaurants in the country.
Marrakesh: Bid Morocco Farewell
After breakfast, greeting by your host and private transfer to the Marrakesh airport. You will be assisted with check-in for your flight departure.
